Why do christains ignore bigotry?

I always hear sports people talk about Tony Dungy being this beacon of humanity and compassion. I have meet him and he was really nice, But I have also heard him say some pretty horrible things about homosexuals. It seems that because he is religious he is allowed to be hateful to homosexuals. Why? How come no one calls him out for this?
