When is it appropriate to use a flashing beacon?

I recently bought a new truck and it came with a flashing "strobe" beacon. My question is, when is it appropriate (or not appropriate) to turn the beacon on? Are their any regulations about when you can or can't have it on (ex: backing into a driveway, driving on the road, parallel parking) what are the "rules and regulations". Thanks alot!
