How hard is it to track an rf beacon with an automated rc car for under $300?

OK so I have a budget of $300 and I want to design and build a rc car that is automated to locate and drive itself to a rf beacon within a range of 500 meters? how difficult would this be? i know "difficult" is a subjective term but say for someone who has an intermediate understanding of programming and electronic concepts.
